Banks
& Burr have been supplying fishing tackle to anglers for nearly forty
years.
The business was started in 1962 by Dave Burr and his
father in law Reg Banks who both realised that a retail shop could just
about survive selling tackle if it was done properly. After a slow
start things began to happen after Dave won the national angling
championship on the River Huntspill in 1965 landing a new British
record |

weight
of 76lb 9oz. This was to remain in the Guinness book of records for over
20 years. The following year Dave captained the England team on the river
Thurne in Norfolk.
The business grew steadily over the next twenty or so years and and
with the addition of well known trout angler Brian Froggatt they could
offer help and advice on most aspects of the sport. |

1989 Dave's son Carlton joined the business and developed the mail order
side, which enabled us to purchase an adjacent property to provide a
larger showroom, This was made necessary due to the increasing amount of
stock we were having to carry. Due to planning restrictions we could not
alter the front of the shop so customers are quite surprised when they
walk in to find a large well stocked shop. |

Dave's
wife Rosemary and Carlton' wife Joanne keep us on our toes and keep
everything tidy and organized. They also make a great cup of coffee. Rose
has worked with Dave for years and happily serves the maggots, pinkies and
squatts and of course its nice for the wives to find a lady in Shop
instead of an all male environment. Simon
Green is general manager of the
store and is the man to talk to about the match side of things and any
mail order queries you may have. |
Perhaps
the biggest growth in angling in recent years is the rise in popularity of
carp and specialist fishing. To this end we now employ our own
"carper" Tony Makepeace who is lives and breathes carp. He is on
hand most days to offer advice on rigs, tackle, etc and is very
knowledgeable on most aspects of bait making. And can be seen in a number of magazines.
