| Now recognized as one of the best tench fisheries in the country. Fish over
1Olb are quite common and simply hundreds are caught in the 6 to 9lb category.
But its not only tench that the lake offers. There are some big pike running to
the upper 2O's and roach around 1-1/2lb are common. With the area being used as a
country park there are restrictions to what you do and how you fish. For a start
NO Bivvies or tents. As there is no night fishing this is not so important. They
only allow float fishing. NO legering or even float legering other than for pike
after Oct Ist.. It has stretched the ingenuity of the anglers to the limit but
they have accepted the rules and so far the fishing has not deteriorated. For
the tench most popular baits work well but boilies and paste baits are favourite
with maggots also taking a fair number of fish. Local expert Ken Downes recommends
a 61b line as the lake is very weedy. The lake is controlled by the Northants
County Council. Day tickets are available from the Rangers office on site.
Season permits are also available and priced at £18.00 for adults and £6.00 for
Ladies, juniors and OAPs. Location. Situated between Northampton and Wellingborough it is close to the villages of Sywell and Mears Ashby. The best
access is from the'A45 Northampton Wellingborough rd coming off the trunk Rd at
the Earls Barton junction and head for Mears Ashby, crossing the A45O0. The
entrance to the Country park is signposted on the left after the junction. Grid
Ref 8365 On Landranger 152. There is a quick route from Rugby but its very much
across country going through Crick, West Haddon, Guilsborough, Brixworth, Holcot
having gone over the causeway at Pitsford reservoir, then Sywell and Mears
Ashby. What is commonly known as the pretty route. |
