Situated about 2 miles South of Rugby near the village of Barby this canal
type water has become very popular with both match and pleasure angler. There
are 62 pegs, all with easy access to an able bodied person. The steep banks down
to most of the early pegs make it difficult for unsteady or disabled anglers.
Car parking is at the road end of the water so it does mean a walk to the
furthest pegs. Tickets are issued on the bank. Match bookings taken and a notice
board by peg 1 indicates what matches are on. The width varies ~from around 9 meters
to I2 meters so it does suit the pole. But the wide variety of species means
that all methods work, even small feeders. The carp have grown well in this
water, no doubt the amount of grub thrown in by the large number of anglers has
helped. Owner Richard Bubb tries to move any fish over about 8lb to his other
pool at Barby but there will always be the odd big one to hassle the anglers
that are not equipped to handle them. There is a good head of crucians which
make for very interesting fishing. Bread punch is probably the best bait for
them but tackle has to be set correctly to detect the shyest of bites.
There is a good head of chub which seem to hole up in some swims, but not all.
They can be caught on maggot and caster on the drop and are great providers of
bites when other ~fish are reluctant to feed. Tench often show up in match bags
from quite small fish to a couple of pounds or so. Bream are there in numbers
but are difficult to catch. Richard is always remarking about the number of
bream he stocked but to date they only show rarely and not in great numbers. Add
loads of roach, rudd perch and gudgeon and you have a perfect fishery with
something for everyone except the real big carp.
