About 75 years ago this was a working cement quarry It appears that during the working they hit huge underground springs which filled the quarry up in a very short time, Work was obviously abandoned but the water remained and for many years was neglected. During the war period of 39 to 45 the quarry received many fish from Coombe pool which was drained because of its close proximity to Coventry and an obvious landmark for aircraft crossing from Germany. Aside from roach and bream there was a lot of tench and these found the water very much to their liking. In recent years it has become noted for the quality of the tench fishing. British Waterways bought the water from the Rugby Portland cement and used to pump out into the canal. This meant fluctuating levels and this restricted fish populations. But following problems with the pump house and a change in policy the water was offered to the local council and they now run it as a park area with the fishing being controlled by the Avon Mill Angling Club. The water is deep, very deep and not recommended for use by young anglers on their own. A lot of bank work has taken place and the place is now much safer than it used to be. The variety of species includes tench, carp, pike, rudd and some lovely roach and perch There has been much speculation about the pike which are alleged to grow very big, but as far as I am aware hardly any fish over 20lb have ever been taken. That does not mean that they do not exist but the theories about monsters from the deep seem highly unlikely. There are Some very huge carp and they can be seen basking on the surface on good sunny days. A few have been caught and to date the best is around 25lb. Day and season permits are available from Banks & Burr or on the bank. Location. North of Rugby centre in the village of Newbold on the B4112. The entrance is opposite Grange road just before the middle of the Village Grid ref 4977 on Landranger 140
