There are now 2 lakes at Gilmorton. The original pool was a disused quarry
and became very popular with local carp anglers. Stocks of silver fish were
introduced and some match fishing took place although the nature of the place
made for very uneven swims. Sensing that there was an obvious demand for a match
lake the owner Tom Baker turned two of his fields into a sizeable lake and can
now take up to 35 anglers in a match. The top lake is mainly for match fishing
and at 2.5 acres is larger than your average custom built lake. It is stocked
with mirror carp to 181b, commons to 151b and ghost carp to 121b. There are
loads of mid range carp plus tench, bream, crucians, roach and rudd. depths are
variable from 5 foot to 14 foot. despite the size of some of the carp the modern
pole is often used to good effect but standard float fishing and legering with
swimfeeder also accounts for many large bags of fish. Rules permit groundbait in
feeders only. Apart from that there are no other bans on baits and
methods. Disabled platforms have been built close to the car park There is
minimum walking to any of the pegs. Built in 1991 this lake is now showing signs
of maturity making it a pleasant place in which to fish. The Bottom lake is a
disused sand and gravel quarry which was hooded in 1958 so its one of the oldest
established carp fisheries in the area. There is a good stock of big carp with
fish to 25lb plus tench to 6lb and bream and the usual roach, some of which go
to 2lb. There are also some good chub approaching 5lb and they provide good
winter sport. Being a quarry there are areas where 40 foot of water can be found
The sides slope steeply and some margin swims are 20 foot deep. It is surrounded
by trees making it well protected from the wind. Sliding float and leger tactics
are best although on a warm summers night there is little to beat the floating
baits. But be careful of the wild life. Opening times are dawn till dusk.
